2c. Government Fosters Wellbeing?
Apart from ‘protecting their people’ from others and themselves, another important function of government is to provide for the well-being of their people – to protect them from external events which might effect them. Unfortunately this seems to have been lost as government is now, and often highly connected to, the heart of ‘economics’ – a vast industrial machine built to exploit the earth’s resources and turn them into money for a few privileged people who support the government from behind the scenes.
We have reached a time now, when individual people, sick of (and often from) the continual raping of their environment for financial profit, are coming forwards as ‘protectors’. Protectors of water, air, sunlight, wildlife, environments – from the giant harvesting machine sponsored by government’s addiction to the madness of ‘economics’. They are often treated as scum and abused by government interdict, by the very forces that are meant to protect them. Many are routinely murdered.
Events at ‘Black Rock’ around an oil pipeline in Dakota provide clear examples. It is my belief that the ‘black snake’ of oil being halted by a collective of Indigenous American Tribes (and veterans) is a seminal event in the history of mankind’s relationship with the planet. Water is life indeed and those at the Oceti Sakowin Camp have stood up to extreme abuse, not to mention the dead of winter, to show people a way forward. Many people over the world have since organised gatherings and protests What a blessing Covid-19 has been for the forces of oppression to shut down the right to protest altogether.
Even before Covid – BC – and under the guise of protection from ‘terrorism’, our parliament bought in swingeing laws, such as ‘The Investigatory Powers Act’ in the UK. This allows the government and their agents to access any information they require, even hacking personal computers and phones in an attempt to forestall any objectors to their plans and those of their overlords. Whistleblowers like Edward Snowden or Julian Assange, who expose what is going on, are harangued on trumped-up charges that diminish them in the public eye – hence marginalising their influence.
One thing is increasingly certain, an industrial infrastructure is no longer compatible with the conditions for healthy life on Earth. If this is to continue the global political and economic structures we have need to be dismantled. This process is something that can no longer be trusted to governments whose members have any capitalist interest at all. Economic development is leading us towards global ecological, economic and social collapse from environmental destruction and climate change.
