7l. Healing Wetiko
Eckart Tolle believes:
“The pollution of the planet is only an outward reflection of an inner psychic pollution; millions of unconscious individuals not taking responsibility for their inner space.”
Many of us know that worldly ambition, material aspiration and perpetual growth are a formula for environmental ruin and mass unhappiness, yet our society is led by people who pursue these goals. “The consuming of another’s life [including the planet’s], for ones own private purpose or profit” [Jack D Forbes] is something the Cree Indians call ‘Wetiko’.
The greed that drives these planet wreckers comes from a deep insecurity. Its like ‘there isn’t enough to go round so I must take as much as possible – way more than I need in order to feel safe’. So this desire to possess and own comes from a deep, personal crisis. Through ‘status’ and the ownership that drives this, it becomes self perpetuating – ‘so-and-so has three Rolex watches and I only have two’…
The personal meaninglessness of their existence can only be filled by consuming and owning and winning. Once this awful virus/addiction takes over, the hungry ghost will risk decency, integrity, fairness, compassion and humanity in pursuit of their goals. There are just so many liars and manipulators out there now! Anneke Lucas, who was a sex slave to Europe’s elite at age 6 wrote the following:
“Power addicts, world leaders and corrupt politicians who abuse children are themselves like children who never grew up, driven to power to avoid ever feeling the humiliation of child abuse again, unconsciously seeking revenge from a place of hurt by recycling the abuse. They lack the courage to heal. I believe that the world is more than ever ready to confront its darkness. We have to if we are to survive as a species.”
The cycles of abuse implicit in our society have come home to roost in our leaders. Bit by bit the insecure have taken over running our systems and investing the world with their insecurities, greed and fears. Far from protecting and keeping their citizens safe, the governments of the UK and US are acting on behalf of a collective of sociopathic, even psychopathic industrialists who want to own everything.
They act in the interests of economics, which has the opposite effect of creating the optimum conditions for healthy and happy life on earth. The system they promote wants you sick and unhappy. In order to best serve money, the world needs to be a gigantic marketplace in which we are all isolated individuals competing against each other. Fear and hate drives this isolation and undermines our ability to cooperate.
Many people consider humans as a sort of virus or cancer spreading across the face of the planet, consuming and destroying everything in their path. But this is really another form of denial based on low self-esteem. We are not a virus. We are not a cancer. At their best, human beings are utterly fantastic beings of wonder! Our potential as beings is infinite.
So it is fairer to say that there are a large number of people with a kind of psychic virus, a possession by the demons of wetiko, that lets them believe that earth-rape for personal benefit is perfectly acceptable. Perhaps if there were enough of us we could change the status associated with owning wealth to something new – a kind of realisation of sickness like a psychological virus that Paul Levy identifies as ‘malignant egophrenia’ in his book ‘Dispelling Wetiko, Breaking the Curse of Evil.’ But this story, the ‘Wetiko Virus’ is written into all of our control systems. One big question I have is ‘can these people be healed and if so, how?’
“We have to have hope…and we believe in Spirit. That’s the only way we can create miracles.”
Chief Arvol Looking Horse at DAPL Oceti Sakowin camp.
“No matter what they ever do to us, we must always act for the love of our people and the Earth. We must not react out of hatred against those who have no sense.”
John Trudel
There are still many cultures that live within limits on planet earth, sharing and valuing their resources without wasting or exploiting. There are also increasing numbers of people waking up and refusing plunder the planet by using oil products, driving petrol or diesel driven cars, refusing to engage fully with the money system, becoming vegan and so on. There are hundreds of thousands of people who, like you, are looking for ways to live a wholesome life on this earth.
“The ability to recognise oneself in the other and the other in oneself is a deeply democratising experience. Empathy is the soul of democracy…the more empathic the culture, the more democratic its values and governing institutions.”
Jeremy Rifkin
The Dalai Lama was once asked if he could summarise his philosophy in five words. Allegedly, he said “I can say it in two words, just ‘Be Kind.’” It is certain to me that compassion has a lot to play in the coming changes and that this is perhaps, the hardest route to take.
To summarise the situation. We have hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people who, with their basic needs fulfilled are waking up to the realisation of the infinite potential of human beings in a universe made of energy.
But they are ruled by a governing system without soul, without heart, run by sociopaths interested in gaining control over money at the expense of life itself, destroying the ability for humans to evolve further. Added to this billions of people on earth are still in poverty or live hand-to-mouth.
How do we change this system into one that is fair for all and still allows humans to reach their potential?
“Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of the Universe. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won’t feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory that is within us. It is not just in some of us; it is in everyone. And, as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
